About 'university illinois online'|Colorado State Approves Online University.








               It               is               frustrating               to               be               looking               at               a               homework               problem               that               you               don't               understand               well               enough               to               even               start.

It               is               almost               as               frustrating               to               know               that               you               are               really               close               to               solving               a               homework               problem,               but               you've               forgotten               one               or               two               things               you               need               to               know               to               get               the               answer.



               What               you               need               is               someone               who               can               walk               you               through               the               assignment,               but               you're               sitting               at               home               and               you               can't               reach               your               teacher.

And               hiring               a               personal               tutor               certainly               isn't               free.

Where               can               you               turn?
               Your               Library               May               Offer               Online               Tutoring               Services               for               Free
               Many               libraries               contract               with               online               tutoring               services               which               will               provide               you               with               an               electronic               classroom               and               a               chat               with               a               qualified,               live               tutor.
               Two               of               the               biggest               companies               which               provide               this               service               are               Brainfuse               and               Tutor.com.

The               exact               services,               hours               of               operation,               and               ages               served               vary               depending               on               the               library,               but               they               offer               the               same               general               types               of               features.

They               generally               serve               students               from               third               grade               on               up               to               college               level.

I               have               used               both               services               while               helping               my               daughter               with               her               science               and               math               homework               and               have               found               them               helpful,               giving               us               tips               and               ideas               for               working               problems,               and               saving               us               an               hour               or               two               of               frustration.

Here               are               the               general               features               they               offer.
               Live               Chat               with               a               Tutor
               The               ability               to               chat               with               an               actual               person               is               the               most               valuable               part               of               these               services.

Once               you               find               your               library's               portal               and               enter               your               library               card               number               and               PIN,               you               can               specify               your               age               and               the               subject               matter               you               need               help               with,               and               you               will               be               connected               with               a               live               tutor.

The               format               is               much               like               a               chat               you               would               find               on               any               other               service.

You               can               type               in               your               question,               and               the               tutor               will               help               lead               you               to               the               answer,               often               by               asking               questions               which               help               to               clarify               what               you               need.
               Sometimes               you               need               to               be               patient,               because               the               tutors               are               often               working               with               more               than               one               person               at               a               time               and               it               can               take               a               couple               of               minutes               for               them               to               respond               to               what               you've               written.

But               I               have               found               that               the               tutors               are               very               good               at               chatting               back               and               forth,               determining               what               the               students               need               to               know,               and               helping               them               discover               the               answer.

It's               important               to               note               that               these               are               actual               tutoring               services,               meaning               that               they               won't               just               work               a               problem               for               you               or               give               you               the               answer               outright.

You               need               to               be               willing               to               answer               the               tutor's               questions,               tell               them               what               you               have               already               learned               about               the               subject               in               question,               and               be               willing               to               work               a               while               with               them               in               order               to               understand               how               to               solve               your               homework               problem.
               Sometimes               you               may               find               that               it               takes               a               very               long               time               to               connect               with               a               tutor,               perhaps               half               an               hour               or               more.

This               generally               happens               right               after               school               (around               4-6               p.m.),               and               sometimes               you               can               get               in               faster               if               you               wait               a               little               while               until               after               the               big               rush               is               over.

Many               of               the               services               go               until               10               p.m.

or               even               midnight.
               Every               once               in               a               while,               you               may               come               across               a               tutor               who               doesn't               know               how               to               help               you,               or               seems               in               a               hurry               to               log               off               without               explaining               things               to               you               fully.

In               that               case,               you               can               simply               end               the               session               with               that               tutor,               and               go               back               into               the               queue               to               find               a               different               one               who               could               be               better               able               to               help               you.

At               the               end               of               each               session,               the               service's               software               will               ask               you               to               fill               out               an               evaluation               form,               and               you               can               tell               them               what               you               thought               of               that               particular               tutor.
               The               services               will               archive               your               sessions,               so               that               you               can               go               back               to               them               and               review               a               session.

Brainfuse               also               allows               you               to               make               a               "movie"               of               a               session,               something               that               might               be               particularly               helpful               if               you               want               to               go               back               and               see               the               separate               steps               in               solving               a               math               problem.
               Subjects               Covered
               You               will               want               to               check               on               your               library's               website               to               see               a               full               list               of               subjects               covered,               but               generally               these               services               can               help               with               most               of               the               major               subjects               offered               in               elementary               schools,               high               schools,               and               colleges.

These               include               math               (from               addition               and               subtraction               on               up               to               calculus),               science               (including               help               with               designing               and               interpreting               science               fair               projects),               history,               and               essay               writing.

Brainfuse               offers               tutoring               in               Spanish               as               well               and               says               that               other               foreign               language               instruction               is               on               the               way.
               Brainfuse               also               advertises               a               comprehensive               essay               writing               program.

You               can               work               with               a               live               tutor               at               the               beginning               of               the               writing               process               when               you               are               developing               general               themes               and               trying               to               organize               your               ideas.

You               can               cut               and               paste               samples               of               your               writing.

Then,               when               your               paper               is               finished,               you               can               submit               it               to               the               Premium               Writing               Lab               in               which               experts               comment               on               your               fluency,               content,               word               choice,               and               organization.

They               say               they               will               be               able               to               get               your               papers               back               to               you               within               24               hours.
               The               Electronic               Classroom
               Both               Brainfuse               and               Tutor.com               feature               the               use               of               an               electronic               whiteboard               along               with               the               tutor-to-student               chat               section.

This               whiteboard               is               particularly               helpful               if               you               have               a               math               question.

You               can               write               out               an               equation               you               are               trying               to               solve,               or               if               you               are               doing               geometry,               you               can               draw               a               figure               that               you               are               working               on.

The               tutor               can               also               draw               in               this               space               and               show               you               where               to               start               solving               the               problem.

You               could               also               use               this               feature               for               mind-mapping               for               a               composition               class,               or               perhaps               creating               a               timeline               for               a               history               class.
               Brainfuse               now               has               a               mobile               app               which               you               can               download.

It               allows               you               to               draw               on               the               whiteboard               with               your               finger.

You               can               also               scan               in               your               assignment               for               the               tutor               to               see.
               Tutor               Qualifications
               The               tutors               generally               have               a               four-year               degree               from               an               accredited               college               or               university               and               some               experience               teaching.

They               include               teachers,               professors,               graduate               students,               and               some               select               undergraduates.

They               also               go               through               an               interview               process               to               see               if               they               can               communicate               clearly               in               an               online               situation.
               Other               Services
               Both               Brainfuse               and               Tutor.com               include               other               services.

Check               with               your               library               to               see               if               you               have               access               to               features               such               as               study               skills               programs,               test               preparation               (including               GED,               ACT               and               SAT),               resume               reviews               and               career               tips.
               Free               Online               Tutoring,               Courtesy               of               Your               Local               Library
               Brainfuse               and               Tutor.com               have               been               picked               up               by               libraries               large               and               small.

Brainfuse               serves               hundreds               of               libraries               throughout               the               country               including               those               in               Philadelphia,               Las               Vegas,               Connecticut               and               Queens.

Tutor.com               includes               sites               in               Texas,               New               Jersey               and               Illinois,               among               many               others.
               If               you               would               like               to               take               advantage               of               free               online               tutoring,               be               sure               to               check               at               all               the               libraries               near               you.

If               your               public               library               doesn't               have               it,               check               with               the               local               academic               library,               or               with               the               library               in               a               nearby               city.

Sometimes               you               can               register               at               other               libraries               in               your               state               and               use               their               online               services               without               being               a               resident               of               the               library               district.
               If               you               can               find               an               institution               which               contracts               with               one               of               these               tutoring               services,               you               are               on               your               way               to               saving               time,               money,               and               frustration               while               working               on               your               homework.
